Question
What is the mean?
tap to flip
Answer
The sum of all values divided by the number of values. Mean = Σx / n.
tap to flip
Question
What is the median?
tap to flip
Answer
The middle value when data is arranged in order. For an even number of values, it is the mean of the two middle values.
tap to flip
Question
What is the mode?
tap to flip
Answer
The value that appears most frequently in a data set. There can be more than one mode (bimodal) or no mode.
tap to flip
Question
What is the range?
tap to flip
Answer
A measure of spread: Range = maximum value − minimum value.
tap to flip
Question
What is the interquartile range (IQR)?
tap to flip
Answer
IQR = Q3 − Q1 (upper quartile minus lower quartile). Measures the spread of the middle 50% of data — less affected by outliers than the range.
tap to flip
Question
What is standard deviation?
tap to flip
Answer
A measure of the spread of data around the mean. A small SD = data clustered near the mean; large SD = data spread out widely. σ = √(Σ(x−μ)²/n).
tap to flip
Question
What is a box plot (box and whisker diagram)?
tap to flip
Answer
A diagram showing the minimum, Q1, median, Q3, and maximum of a dataset — giving a visual summary of distribution and spread, and highlighting outliers.
tap to flip
Question
What is a histogram?
tap to flip
Answer
A chart for grouped continuous data where frequency density is plotted on the y-axis. Area of each bar = frequency. Bars have no gaps.
tap to flip
Question
What is frequency density?
tap to flip
Answer
Frequency density = frequency ÷ class width. Used on histograms so that bar area represents frequency (important when class widths differ).
tap to flip
Question
What is probability?
tap to flip
Answer
A measure of how likely an event is to occur, on a scale from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). P(event) = number of favourable outcomes / total number of possible outcomes.
